Columbia Emergency Medical Group is the independent physician group staffing the Emergency Department at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center — one of the most capable and comprehensive EDs in Los Angeles County.
A closer look at the people, the pace, and the purpose behind one of Southern California's most capable emergency departments.
CEMG was founded in 1976, when Long Beach Memorial Medical Center became one of the first emergency departments in the world to be staffed exclusively by residency-trained emergency physicians. We started with six physicians caring for 60–70 patients a day in a 20-bed ED. Today, 40 board-certified emergency physicians and six advanced practitioners see more than 300 patients daily across 65 beds.
"The emergency department considers itself a service department — we serve our shared patients, our colleagues, and the Medical Center. Our door is always open to you, both literally and figuratively." Dr. Anthony Arguija — Medical Director & President/CEO, CEMG
There are very few emergency departments in Los Angeles County able to provide this range of services — and we do not take that responsibility lightly.
Comprehensive evaluation and treatment for adult patients, including time-sensitive cardiovascular and neurological emergencies around the clock.
Seven fellowship-trained pediatric emergency physicians supporting Miller Children's Hospital, serving as an EDAP receiving center for complex transfers from across the region.
Adult and pediatric trauma receiving capability with full surgical backup and critical care support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
A designated treatment center for acute stroke and myocardial infarction, with direct catheterization lab activation and rapid neurology response protocols.
One of a limited number of EDs in LA County equipped to receive patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.
An authorized paramedic base station providing direct medical oversight and radio control for EMS units throughout the region, 24 hours a day.
"Emergency medicine cannot be practiced in a vacuum. With the support of our colleagues and the Medical Center, our ED has become one of the most comprehensively capable departments in the region."
CEMG has been involved in medical education since the department's founding in 1976. All of our physicians hold active academic affiliations, and two serve as ABEM oral examiners — reflecting our commitment to the specialty at the national level.
Many of our physicians have been honored with the Golden Apple Teaching Award, recognizing exceptional dedication to resident education and clinical instruction.
Two of our physicians serve as national board examiners — and are available as resources for trainees preparing for certification.
Whether you're a prospective PA/NP, a rotating resident, or a physician interested in our group, we'd like to hear from you. Our door is always open.
